The world today runs on the internet and that’s a fact. There’s no denying it whatsoever. Almost every task related to our daily life has an online alternative now. Be it shopping, taxes, bill payments, lodging complaints or any other thing, it can be done while sitting at home if one has an internet connection. The most common use of the internet today is definitely the task of browsing.

Browsing or surfing the internet is what we do when we’re talking about our day to day internet usage. Certain software or applications which are specifically designed for the task of browsing are given the term browsers. The most widely used browser today is `Chrome` which is a software/application designed by Google itself. It has all those features that a web browser needs and it’s quite simple to use as well. Almost every android and windows device come with Google chrome pre-installed in it. Google chrome is quick, snappy, secure, and efficient.

However, all these features come along with a small price to pay or issue as some people like to frame it. You read the title, Google chrome is a browser famous for consuming RAM (Random Access Memory) and lots of it in some cases.

As mentioned above, Chrome is a browser that’s super good and efficient. It has a great UI despite being simple and easy to use as well. The task of browsing can be classified into several other parts on the basis of the purposes behind it. Most people manage all these different tasks in any browser by using the feature of tabs. Open a new tab for a new task while one is in the middle of a task or a tab is already open, that’s how this generally works.

For example, let’s assume we’re browsing an online shopping store and suddenly we find the need to look up a word’s meaning online. Closing the current tab and then looking up the word and then again opening the shopping site seems a lot of work. We can just add a new tab for looking up that word’s meaning while the shopping site stays open in its tab in the background. This feature is quite easy to use and is used countless times by us without even realising it.

Now what does chrome eating up RAM has to do with this? The answer is that Google chrome initiates a whole new process for each new tab opened. In simpler words, when one opens a new tab in chrome, chrome adds a new process in the background assigned solely to manage that new tab only. You open 5 new tabs on chrome and it’ll add 5 new processes which will lead to consumption of RAM.

Why does Chrome need to initiate a new process every time a new tab is opened?

  • The very first reason behind chrome initiating a new process/thread in the background every time a new tab is opened in it is that it keeps our data safe and secure while keeping it easily accessible as well.
  • It manages our currently open tab brilliantly by solely managing it through a separate thread while retaining info in previously open tabs.
  • This superfast tab and data management of chrome is definitely a good thing but it clogging up insane amounts of memory is also something that can’t be ignored.
  • Chrome keeps tabs separate for security reasons as well. This is called sandboxing.

It’s true that chrome does it for the users’ sake and for enhancing the overall experience but still, devices with low RAM might not function that well if most of their memory is consumed by chrome alone.


What users need to be aware of while using chrome?

  • Memory management is something one should not take a negligible approach. One should be aware of one’s RAM capabilities and what amount of processes can it handle at once.
  • As mentioned before, chrome hogs up RAM but keeps our data safe and secure, however, that’s not a thing only chrome is capable of. There are plenty of decent browsers out there.
  • One should keep a check on how many tabs are open at a time if one owns a device not very high on RAM as it is possible to an extent that one or two of the tabs might end up crashing.
  • Chrome sometimes might take up an insane amount of memory and that’s definitely not a very nice thing so we should keep checking on it every once in a while.


Chrome hogging up an insane amount of memory is definitely an issue in a way but it does it for the user’s sake only. Our data is kept safe with chrome and we don’t have to worry about tabs crashing as well. However, chrome isn’t the only browser out there, we have good browsers like Brave browser, Mozilla etc.

There are multiple quality browsers available and they all have their own methods of handling the user’s data and information. There are also some browsers out there which serve a single particular purpose only.
