COVID-19: Feature phones will soon get app like Arogya Setu

Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Tuesday that states have appreciated the Arogya Setu app and work is on bringing in a similar solution for feature phones. It will be launched soon. The minister interacted with the IT minister of states on Tuesday through a video conference. The meeting discussed the challenges of Covid-19, tech innovation and the IT and electronics sectors. In a tweet on Tuesday, Ravi Shankar Prasad said, every state has appreciated the Arogya Setu app and shared its views on it.

He assured the states that such a similar solution for feature phones is being developed and will be launched very soon.

The government’s mobile application was developed to track Arogya Sethu Coronavirus patients. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said on April 24 that the app had received 75 million (7.5 crores) downloads. The Arogya Setu app sends alerts to people if they come in contact with someone familiar or people around them who are positive. The district administration is asking all educational institutions and departments to promote the download of the app. The currently existing version of the Arogya Setu app is suited for smartphones.

App to work on JioPhone

When asked about the new solution, IT ministry sources said that the app will work on JioPhone which supports the KaiOS operating system. In addition, the source said that 1921 is an IVRS in which self-tested on the app can also be done on the phone. The response will be taken and sent to the health system. According to estimates, India has over 40crore feature phones.

The Arogya Setu app uses Bluetooth and GPS to let you know you’re at risk. While GPS tracks the location of the person in real-time, Bluetooth will track when someone infected with the novel coronavirus comes close. It tracks when it comes at a distance of up to 6 feet.
